Recently there has a trend that more and more pregnant moms of breech baby came for treatment at late weeks. For moxa working in optimal time window is between 32 weeks to 35 weeks, moxa turning breech baby from 35 weeks to 37 weeks can be very difficult.
People come for treatment at later weeks have several reasons:
1) don’t know moxa can help. So they have tried other easy methods, such as temperature, light, inversion position. This can take days to know result. Normally patient will see doctor every week. Every three weeks they will have ultrasound to check progress. However, with time running and without professional help, this can be very pressing.
2) knowing moxa can help. However, over estimate the do-it-by-herself. It may seem to be simple and cheap to do. The moxibustion video online is only for teaching purpose. It does not have enough level of stimulation. Not many people can perform surgery just because they have seen some video clips online. Therefore, this can make breech baby miss the optimal treatment window.
3) Even with medical hand ECV(Eternal Cephalic Version), risks exist as well. Twisting or squeezing of the umbilical cord, rupturing or tearing of the uterus or tearing of the amniotic sac, which can cause premature labor, all can be very serious. So patient might feel nervous to go this route.
Instead of ECV external manipulation, moxa and acupuncture makes baby move by his/herself. With breech baby at 35 weeks to 37 or 38 weeks, chance of turning naturally can be very slim. Acupuncturist has to increase stimulation to make baby move to the head down position. Acupuncture and moxa works together on different meridian points plus patient performs physical movement. My experience is still a few babies turn in 4 to 10 visits/consecutive days.
