A normal menstruation means that uterine bleeding occurs every 21 to 35 days and is not excessive. The duration of menstrual bleeding is normally between three and seven days. Abnormal uterine bleeding occurs when either the frequency, texture, color or quantity of uterine bleeding differs from that mentioned above or the woman has spotting or bleeding between her menstrual periods.
A variety of factors may cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Structural abnormalities of the reproductive system and ovulation disorders are the two most common causes.
In Chinese Medicine including acupuncture and herbs, the abnormal uterine bleeding is a major topic in irregular menstruation. It can be anovulatory or Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding or under or menorrhagia (excessively prolonged or heavy menstruation), mid cycle bleeding, irregular bleeding. Treatment has to combination patient’s pattern differentiation of pulse, tongue reading, stage of cycle and other pathological conditions.
For anovulatory or Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, aside blood stasis, there are other factors cause the anovulatory. Treatment of acupuncture will be to notify blood, remove stagnation. Or other condition such as spleen Qi deficiency as some patient go on diet, then acupuncture herbal treatment would be to notify spleen function. Or it could be liver Qi stagnation, treatment would be to smooth Qi.
For excessively prolonged or heavy menstruation, acupuncture and herbal treatment would be to stop bleeding at beginning, then working on the core cause of the bleeding.
