Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a condition in which an unborn baby is smaller than it should be. The baby is not growing at a normal rate inside the womb.
Delayed growth puts the baby at risk of stillbirth, or the least certain health problems during pregnancy, delivery, and after birth. Such as
Low birth weight
Difficulty handling the stresses of vaginal delivery
Decreased oxygen levels
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Low resistance to infection
IUGR is not strange to Chinese Medicine. It is called “Tai Wei Bu Zhang”. There have been many formulae to treat it based on the different syndrome. Differentiation includes deficiency of Kidney Qi, deficiency of Blood and Kidney Yin. Normally we will consider herbs such as Huang Qi like Bu Zhong yi Qi Tang. Or Tai Shan Pai Shi San, or Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.
Acupuncture in pregnancy has to be perform by specially trained doctors as some acupuncture points are forbidden during whole or part of pregnancy. Acupuncture with combination of Chinese medicine can increase the blood flow and nutrition supply through placenta to help baby grow.
Recently I treated a 29 weeks pregnant lady. Her doctor found that her baby was one week behind of growth. She also has back pain and fatigue condition. After 4 weeks treatment, doctor exam-ed her and found her baby was 60 % or above average of similar weeks. Also baby moved and correctly positioned, not breech.
