One of my patient wrote to me recently, “Wanted to let you know that my cycle started yesterday which is about a week early. There were 22 days in my cycle. This has not happened before. My cycle has always been 24-27 days. The only difference I can think of is that I got the first COVID vaccine.”
While there haven’t been studies that show an impact to menstrual cycle as a side effect. Many women on social media are experiencing this. There are already discussion about it
Some people even had more side effect on their period, “I”I am exactly 1 week after my Moderna 2nd shot and I started a very heavy cycle for me, and I’m about 2.5 weeks early,” one wrote. “I got the Moderna on the last day of my period. Nine (!!!!) days later another period appeared and has been a nightmare.”
For conventional medicine, there is not much conclusion about the cause/impact. Gloria A. Bachmann, MD, associate dean for women’s health at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, said “Menstrual cycles can be altered or influenced by many factors, including stress, poor sleep, exercise, and some medications,” she says. “Therefore, it wouldn’t be that unusual for some women to notice, after receiving the vaccination, changes in their period, such as it coming on earlier, or having a heavier flow, or noticing more cramping than they usually have.”
According to Chinese Medicine, there should be impact on menstrual cycle. The COVID Vaccine like COVID will generate body immune reactions. One of effect is Fever or chills. The Zheng Qi or Wei Qi is struggling with the external Evil Qi invasion. Therefore, it is showed as excess Blood heat or inflammation. To the menstrua cycle, it will be shorter and heavy.
Then what happens if a woman is doing fertility treatment, or IUI/ IVF, OR Frozen Embryo Transfer? I think it would be better to take vaccine at different time. We don’t have exact data about the impact on IUI/IVF so far, at least, taking vaccine can add up more stress in the process.
